2. Ongoing Demand for Smaller Size and Lower Standby Current in Automotive Applications

The automotive industry is making great strides in four fields referred to as CASE, an acronym formed by combining Connected, Autonomous, Shared & services and Electric. The following are some of the specific trends associated with this.

C (Connected):
The addition of TCU (Telematics Control Unit) for communications with the outside world
A (Autonomous):
The addition of ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance System) ECUs and sensors such as cameras and millimeter-wave radars that perform sensing around the vehicle
S (Shared & services):
The expansion of PaaK (Phone-as-a-Key) to include high security and convenience
E (Electric):
The electrification of drive trains and auxiliary equipment that have so far been powered by other sources of energy

2. Ongoing Demand for Smaller Size and Lower Standby Current in Automotive Applications 2

CASE is gathering speed and has led to an ever increasing number of electrical components (ECUs, sensors, electrification components) being introduced into automobiles. However, as the size of an automobile has largely remained unchanged, the only way forward has been to downsize ECUs.

The increasing number of electrical components that are connected to the 12V auxiliary batteries in HEV, EV and gasoline powered vehicles means that the standby current* of each ECU has to be minimized to prevent battery depletion.

*Standby current: Quiescent current, or the current that flows even when the ignition is turned OFF

3. Ongoing Downsizing of Applications

Cameras, millimeter-wave radars and other sensors, TCU, ADAS ECU, EPS, HUD, DMS, smart entry systems and other equipment must be made smaller to accommodate housing sizes and installation requirements.
Especially, cameras and millimeter-wave radars must blend in with the overall design and therefore face stringent size requirements. Since the actual size of the camera module housing is an ultra-small 25mm x 25mm, the size of the circuit boards that go inside must be even smaller. And the large number of components installed on these boards has to be smaller still.

ABLIC proposes two approaches to downsize the increasing number of components.

 

Downsizing Proposal 1  - Small Packages

One of ABLIC’s strengths is the small size of our ICs and the packages they are housed in, which help to shrink the size of customer applications.
ABLIC provides a lineup of HSNT Series packages, the industry’s smallest class of packages as packages for automotive components. Unlike regular small packages, the HSNT Series have outer leads and are therefore not just small but have excellent mountability.

Outer leads provide the following advantages:

  • Easy to mount
  • High mounting strength
  • Permits automated visual inspections

ABLIC provides high-performance ICs to reduce external components and shrink their size.

Specifically, we intend to integrate most of the required external components and functionality into a 1-chip IC and reduce the number of components that require noise countermeasures to contribute to smaller ECUs.

4. Ongoing Reduction in +B Power Supply Circuit Current Consumption

Standby current increases as more components are connected to a 12V auxiliary battery. Standby current is the current that flows to the 12V auxiliary battery at all times even when the ignition is turned off and is the sum of quiescent current of all ECUs in the +B power supply system circuit. When the ignition is turned ON, the ECUs go on and high current starts to flow, however, there is no risk the battery will be depleted as it is also being charged by the alternator/generator. However, when the ignition is turned OFF, the alternator/generator are no longer on so a large standby current value could quickly deplete the battery.

To prevent battery depletion, the standby current of the +B power supply circuit must be below a certain value. For that reason, each ECU is assigned a standby current upper limit. For example, by setting an upper limit of 100µA or less for each ECU will lower overall standby current.

Since newer models contain more ECUs, the upper limit of 100µA in the older model must be lowered, sometimes as low as 50µA to not exceed the overall limit.

ABLIC has solved the increase in standby current by using our power supply ICs with low current consumption. ABLIC provides a wide lineup of power supply ICs with low current consumption to effectively reduce standby current.

A typical example is the S-19214 Series LDO with a rated voltage of 45V and output current of 1A that boasts a self-current consumption of 1/100 or less of that of competing products and can be connected to a 12V auxiliary battery. In this way, our low self-current consumption (ISS) ICs contribute to lowering ECU standby current.
