ABLIC Launches the S-82P1A/S-82P1B Series of 1-cell Battery Protection ICs with the World’s Highest (*1) Charge-discharge Overcurrent Detection Voltage Accuracy of ±0.75mV (*2)

— Proprietary know-how substantially reduces heat generation of the protection circuit board to cope with the need for quick charging of smart phones and other devices —

ABLIC Inc. (President: Nobumasa Ishiai, head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo hereinafter “ABLIC”) today launched the S-82P1A/S-82P1B Series of 1-cell battery protection ICs with the world’s highest charge-discharge overcurrent detection voltage accuracy of ±0.75mV (*2).
A 1-cell lithium-ion battery is used in a wide variety of applications, especially in IT devices such as smart phones or wearable devices. The ongoing increase in high performance of smart phones has created a trend for devices with high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. This has in turn raised the demand for large charge current to quickly charge those high-capacity batteries.
The problem is that an increase in charge current also increases the heat generated in the current detection resistor on the protection circuit board. While the resistance value of the current detection resistor needs to be lowered to control heat generation, simply lowering the resistance value will increase variations in detection current value that may make it difficult to ensure safety. A protection IC with high overcurrent detection voltage accuracy is required to control the variations in the detection current value, lower the resistance value in the current detection resistor, while also controlling heat generation.
The new S-82P1A/S-82P1B Series of 1-cell lithium-ion battery protection IC products launched today include the following features: (1) the world’s highest charge-discharge overcurrent detection voltage accuracy of ±0.75mV controls variations in overcurrent detection while also managing to maintain low resistance in the current detection resistor (a feature shared by all models in the series), (2) the charge-discharge control function uses external signals to disable charge-discharge operations of the battery pack and if a PTC thermistor is connected, it provides a thermal protection function (S-82P1A Series), (3) an overcharge detection voltage accuracy of ±15mV places it in the industry’s high-accuracy top class (a feature shared by all models in the series).
These features make it possible to control heat generation in the protection circuit board even as the charge current increases. In addition, high accuracy overcharge current detection and the thermal protection function also contribute significantly to greater product safety.
ABLIC will continue to develop lithium-ion battery protection ICs with even greater accuracy and higher performance to roll out products for applications in a wide variety of fields.
