S-5420 detects the intensity of the UV-A (315 – 400nm) rays and UV-B (280 – 315nm) rays, these cause tanning, wrinkles and freckles. But S-5420 does not support the shortest waveband, UV-C (100 – 280nm). UV-C rays kill or inactivate germs, bacteria and viruses and UV-C rays are used as germicidal lamps in many industrial equipment. It is necessary to monitor the UV irradiation unit of the equipment on a regular basis. But UV radiation is invisible. Exposure to UV-C for a long time causes retinal damage. Therefore, UV sensor, which supports UV-C and is used for remote UV-C light monitoring system, is an essential element for the equipment.
In fact, the high-sensitivity photodiode (PD) mounted on the “S-5420” has already supported the UV-C detection ability. The key to the commercialization of the UV-C sensor is package material.
The current package of the “S-5420” is made of epoxy resin, which transmits the UV-A and UV-B light. But the shorter wavelength UV-C does not pass through the epoxy resin (See Fig.1). Currently a new packaging material, which transmits the UV-C light and ensures the reliability at higher level, is being developed.
ABLIC has also been developing All-in-one solution which integrates calibration functionality. “S-5420” consists of high-sensitivity UV light PD and low-sensitivity UV light PD (See Fig.2). Intensity of the UV light is detected by external arithmetic unit which is calculating the difference between output data from these two PDs. ADC is needed to convert analog data to digital. If these calculation functions and data processing functions are integrated into one package and formed into one chip, control signals will become unnecessary, total area and electricity consumption can be reduced. Thereby, the new product will benefit not only the customers but also the development side as well.
“S-5420” was developed applying optical sensing technology which was rooted in the ABLIC’s CIS (Contact Image Sensor) products and expanding its target from visible light to UV-A and UV-B light. Applications of “S-5420” include wearable appliances and industrial equipment (See Fig.3). From now on, it will expand the sensing capability to detect UV-C, integrate processing and peripheral functions into one chip, and provide rich product line-up to develop new market (See Fig.4). Monitor amount of ultraviolet light will be enabled anywhere by connecting these products to vehicles and other IoT devices. UV sensor products have a great business potential. The products will continue to attract more and more attention.
